Poysner, Riggins, & Jackson - “Funky Butt pt. 1” (produced by Madlib)

This energy comes from a different place than this underground library.  Instead, I remember spending some time, myself, in the Funky Butt—some of the best live jazz I’ve ever seen, and for free on a Monday night.  …pretty long way to New Orleans right now.

tuneage:

Madlib’s Medicine Show series has to be one of the more ambitious projects of the year, with the bad kid releasing a new album each month in 2010. Each one is markedly different—spanning styles, genres, and forms. For month seven, Madlib explores the jazzier side of his many alter egos with High Jazz. The title itself is a nod to the uber-bugged out (and quite awesome) 1976 album, Stanton Davis’ Ghetto/Mysticism. Pretty fitting if you ask me given the eclectic and far-out nature of the myriad Madlib-centered groups that feature on his disc.

Music is a higher revelation than all wisdom and philosophy.
Music is the electrical soil in which the spirit lives, thinks and invents.
